The wonderful Digital Development Team within the Library Technology Services Department has released another major update to the digital collections systems, which power the UF Digital Collections (UFDC), Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC), and Florida Digital Newspaper Library.
I see this time of year as a time for giving thanks and gifts, and this is definitely a gift to us all! Huge thanks to the team!
The full list is below. I want to pull out just a couple of things:
- Serial navigation view for items that are within a serial title
- This has been wanted for years! While within a single issue of a newspaper or serial, people wanted to just go to the next, without needing to go out to the top listing. See this newspaper issue, which has the date for this issue at the top, and then the option to go to the prior, next, or jump to another issue to view: https://dloc.com/AA00010883/00404/images
- you can now sort search results by title
- This has been wanted since day 2 of the new system, which was a year and a couple of weeks ago. See the left-side facets to see how to limit to a title: https://dloc.com/results?q=flowers
- enabled ascii character folding in Elasticsearch to support search terms with diacritics
- This has been wanted for years! This means if someone searches for Jose Marti (no accents) they still get the proper results: https://ufdc.ufl.edu/results?q=jose%20marti
New Index Changes
- item titles now include the nonSort portion of the title
- you can now sort search results by title
- improved subject facets that include all of the subject subfields
- improved mediatype facets
- improved restricted item views
- added fields to default search: series title, finding guide/aid, general note
- added new facets: title (group title), degree discipline, degree level
- added new searchable fields: series title, uniform title, alternative title, physical description, general note, abstract, isbn, oclc
- improved search within item view so it should only show for items that definitely have page text indexed in Elasticsearch
- enabled ascii character folding in Elasticsearch to support search terms with diacritics
Other
- Serial navigation view for items that are within a serial title
- Persistent filter input on the collections page
- Fixes (including front end & back end) for issues such as pdf files showing up as page images, and images not appearing when they should
- Updated popular titles for dloc & fdnl
