More Information
The George A. Smathers Libraries present an exhibition in honor of the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Brothers Grimm, Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children and Household Tales). Grimm Changes: from folk tale to fairy tale will be on view through December 14, 2012 in the Smathers Library (East) 2nd floor Special and Area Studies Research Room.
Featuring 30 books from the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature, Grimm Changes illustrates the transformation of the Grimm tales from orally shared folk tales to the beloved fairy tales of today. Included in the exhibition is a copy of the first English translation of Children and Household Tales, and works by notable authors and illustrators Arthur Rackham, Kay Nielsen, and John Gruelle.
Not originally intended for children, Children and Household Tales was published for scholars and the middle class. The first volume, a collection of folk tales that were considered to be distinctly German, was published in 1812 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. During their lifetime, there were seven editions, the last one appearing in 1857. By this time, Wilhelm Grimm had succumbed to public desire and heavily altered and edited many tales so that they were hardly recognizable from the first edition and thus suitable for children.
Grimm Changes: from folk tales to fairy tales is curated by Suzan A. Alteri and Jasmine Tran.

* I initially wrote that this conflicts with Faculty Senate, which is 3-5pm, and for which this is not a conflict. I have allergies and simply wasn’t processing this correctly.
