Lourdes Santamaría-Wheeler, Exhibits Coordinator for the UF Smathers Libraries, will be doing a webinar on June 2 from 1-2pm (EST). The webinar is free and registration is through the web form here: http://tblc.org/events/creating-online-exhibits
Lourdes is an expert on designing exhibits, online and otherwise, and will be covering core topics on conceptualizing and planning exhibits, as well as important considerations like how much text for what type of label, and more. Creating Online Exhibits

Online exhibits are more than a marketing tool. They are another way to grant users access to and understanding of unique and/or hidden collections. Many institutions are already providing access through digital collections, yet this is often insufficient. While granting access, digital collections do not provide the interpretation or background necessary to further understand an object. Yes, many collections have a home or landing page that serve as an introduction to the materials, but that only provides a general cursory view.
Together, online exhibitions linked to full resources within digital collections are the ideal vehicle to highlight and explain rare materials. Online exhibitions also serve as a great companion to physical exhibitions, whether as precursors or complements, since they allow access to the full resource.
During this workshop, learn the basics of creating online exhibits. From selecting a topic and curating items to copyright considerations and writing interpretive text, we will cover every step of the process. The principles discussed will be applicable whether you use freely available software or fully design the webpages yourself. Supplemental reference materials will be provided.

Instructor Bio ~ Lourdes Santamaría-Wheeler
Lourdes Santamaría-Wheeler is the Exhibits Coordinator for the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries. This role includes planning, directing, and organizing an active exhibition program designed to share, interpret, and promote the Libraries’ collections. Currently, she is Co-PI on “Preserving a Legacy, Celebrating a Centennial, Leveraging an Extraordinary Human Achievement,” a three year IMLS grant. Recent publications include “Turning Views into Visits: How Online Exhibits Can Encourage Collection Awareness and Usage” (with Rebecca Jefferson and Laurie N. Taylor) in theProceedings of the Association of College & Research Libraries Conference, 2013 and “Advancing Digitization: Art and Technology” (with Laura Nemmers) in the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art at Twenty Years: The Collection Catalogue. She holds an MA in Museology and a BFA in Creative Photography, both from UF.
