Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head, Archives, Library & Collections the Digital Collections Technician will be responsible for the overall development of digital repository system and facilitates access to the system in collaboration with the staff of the Archives, Library, Exhibits (web and physical) & Information Technology departments. Works with Applied Scholarship Program and others as needed. Key responsibilities are as follows:
• Provides technical digitization services including scanning and digital imagery & photography
• Uploads digital files into internal and external digital content management system
• Creates and maintains metadata and indexing points for the digital collection database housed in ALM (Archives, Library and Museum) software
• Provides support for specialized digitization and digital collection management equipment and software
• Maintains storage, backups and access to digital materials
• Harvests digital materials from websites, vendors and open-source databases and other sources and incorporates it into the ALM software
• Performs necessary post-production editing and manipulation. May include: manipulating images in photo editing software; converting files from and to multiple formats, analogue to digital conversion, utilization of Optical Character Recognition-OCR software, and digital to digital format conversion
• Controls digital collection quality according to national and international library and archives standards.
• Participates in the planning of digital technology migration
• Assists museum staff in the technical use of digital collections in exhibits, presentations, and other activities of the museum
• Creates documentation relating to job functions and activities
• Produces descriptions of digitized material where necessary
• Assists in archival and library digital collection organization, as needed
• Provides technical expertise in the selection, acquisition and preservation of digital materials
• Assist in evaluating new technologies, tools, equipment and applications in order to make recommendations
• Compiles job-relevant statistics and generates progress reports as needed
• Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Requirements for this position are as follows:
Skills and Knowledge – Required
• Post-secondary degree/diploma in Information Technology related to Archival and/or Library Technology.
• 2-3 years’ experience working in a digitization and a digital collection environment as applied to digital archives, libraries or modern museums. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience will be acceptable.
• Expert knowledge of advanced digital scanning, audio-visual and photographic equipment, scanning and graphics software and a wide range of digital file formats
• Advanced knowledge of current and relevant metadata standards
• Advanced experience with digitization hardware and related software applications and tools, digital data storage and search methods
• Basic database design and maintenance experience
• Basic digital document indexing experience
• Demonstrated experience in migrating and preserving digital assets
• Works with manager to liaise with outside vendors as well as internal departments relating to digitization
Skills and Knowledge – Desired
• Knowledge of XHTML, XML or XSL
• Knowledge of 3D object scanning and digitization techniques
• Knowledge of Open Archives Initiative (OAI)
• Experience working in an archive, library or museum setting
• Knowledge of copyright standards for digital materials
• Knowledge of industry trends and equipment
• Education, experience or interest in human rights
• Ability to create appropriate technical and training guidelines and documents for software applications, hardware and services
• Intermediate knowledge of software such as: Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Studio, Logic Studio and familiarity with at least one digital repository software platform (e.g., DSpace, Fedora, EPrints, III Symposia or CONTENTdm)
• Able to communicate with proficiency in both official languages, oral and written

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
