Growing up in a mixed Sephardic-Ashkenazi home, Ruth Behar was educated in the Jewish cuisines of East and West, of Islamic Europe and Christian Europe, and in their gradual fusion as her family moved from Cuba to the United States. The foods of home became a reflection of a diaspora journey. That journey continues to unfold, as she now travels back and forth to Cuba to connect with the island and its revitalized Jewish community and evolving arts and gourmet food culture. In her lecture she will talk about the many meanings of the foods of home — emotional, cultural, economic, religious, and political — in hopes of illuminating a complex Cuban Jewish search for a sense of belonging in the world.
