Humanities and the Sunshine State
Exploring Florida’s Past, Present, and Future
Discover what humanities research teaches us about contemporary Florida life, including cultural diversity and the changing demographic landscape, sustainability and food justice, the health of Florida springs and farms, and the role of institutions and sports in community-building. Participants will interact with expert faculty, librarians, and graduate students from the University of Florida and Santa Fe College to explore how theoretical ideas and methods from the humanities disciplines (history, classics, archaeology, religion, literature, women’s studies, philosophy, and more) shape our practical experiences of Florida, and vice versa.
Humanities and Sunshine State is a one-week residential academic program for rising high school juniors and seniors. Organized by the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere in collaboration with the Center for Precollegiate Education and Training at the University of Florida, this program will provide selected students with a meaningful college experience that capitalizes on the unique history and environment of Florida. Social and leadership development activities provide a well-rounded and fun experience for participants.
Selected participants will explore how Florida’s past has shaped the present and how today’s actions affect the future of the state. Planned activities include visits to special collections where students will handle historical documents; fieldtrips to Florida springs, Cedar Key, the Rawlings estate, and Rosewood; hands-on demonstrations of digital archiving and recording oral traditions; tours of the UF campus and near-by North Florida cultural landscapes; and social activities at the UF Reitz Union Game Room, campus green spaces, and UF film series.
Motivated students interested in learning beyond their traditional high school classroom are encouraged to apply. All high school academic concentrations and career interests are welcome.
This program is sponsored by a generous grant from the Florida Humanities Council with additional funding from the Rothman Endowment of the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida.
