The UF Informatics Institute has two exciting upcoming events. I’m sadly out of town for the first one, but am very excited to attend the second one, and I hope to see many great UF folks there!
UF Informatics Institute Events:
On Monday, October 27 (4 pm to 7 pm) in Smathers Library East 100, Michael McDonald (Political Science) and Jeffrey Johnson (Anthropology) will introduce themselves and the UFII Seminar Series this semester. In this series, our newly hired colleagues in Informatics will make presentations about how their work intersects with our disciplines and Informatics (with time for questions). The presentations will be from 4 pm to 5:30 pm, followed by a Meet and Greet with hors d’oeuvres until 7 pm. Bios of the presenters are available here. RSVP to Amanda Cluxton.
On Tuesday, November 18 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, Chris McCarty and Michael Martinez will host the UFII Information meeting and lunch for the Social Sciences and Digital Humanities. This meeting is primarily intended to open a conversation with continuing UF faculty about the UF Informatics Institute programs and opportunities. We will bring together scholars in the social sciences and digital humanities with scholars working on algorithms and techniques, so as to help those working on substantive issues find interdisciplinary colleagues who can help with solutions, and help those working on algorithms better understand the social sciences and the complexities of social science and humanities data (including, for examples, analyzing text, multilevel data structures, and missing data). Informatics is more than just “big data”, and can help with complex data, as well.
