JOB SUMMARY
The European Studies Librarian is a tenure track library faculty position in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library (Library West). The European Studies Librarian assesses needs and establishes outreach to the students and faculty of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, as well as providing in-depth consultations and engaging in user evaluation and analysis to stay abreast of needs and departmental focus. Responsible for the overall development, management and coordination of the George A. Smathers Libraries resources in all formats for the European languages, literatures and cultures collections (Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese). This position supports the University’s academic program in these subject areas as well as in interdisciplinary humanities programs supported by the University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Responsible for analyzing the University’s program in Languages, Literatures and Cultures and collaborating with librarians and the academic faculty to establish collection profiles, selection guidelines, and preservation, location and cataloging priorities. Evaluates existing collection strengths and current collecting intensities. Provides specialized reference services and library instruction for the study of European languages and cultures. In collaboration with the Arabic, Germanic, Slavic Studies Librarian and others, acts as Libraries’ liaison to the various Centers on campus. Provides general reference and instruction services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors at the Library West Research Assistance Desk, as well as online through the Ask-A-Librarian chat and texting service, email and via telephone queries.
The library encourages staff participation in reaching management decisions and consequently the European Studies Librarian will serve on various committees and teams. To support all students and faculty and foster excellence in a diverse and global society, the European Studies Librarian will be expected to include individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, genders, and perspectives in work activities. The European Studies Librarian will pursue professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional service activities in order to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Through ongoing engagement with appropriate academic faculty keeps informed of the development of academic programs and faculty interest to ensure the Libraries’ collections and services support curriculum and research needs, and informs clientele about relevant Libraries’ issues
2. Defines goals, establishes objectives, plans and manages budgets, and coordinates collection development activities with other subject specialists, and librarians, with respect to resources for the European languages, literatures and cultures collections
3. Analyzes the European languages, literatures and cultures collection development program activities and provides reports, strategies, assessments, and studies or surveys as required
4. Participates in the Humanities and Social Sciences general reference program
5. Responsible for advanced reference and research consultation in support of European languages, literatures and cultures, including the development of library guides (LibGuides) and other online resources
6. Designs and delivers library instruction and library related courses as appropriate
7. Participates in Libraries’ fundraising efforts
8. Participates in appropriate professional development and continuing education endeavors, and engages in scholarly research resulting in publication
9. Liaises and collaborates with faculty, students, researchers and other departments to further library digital scholarship initiatives & partnerships
10. Represents the Libraries in appropriate university, local, state, regional, and national bodies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
• Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or advanced degree in relevant subject specialty
• Eight years of relevant post graduate degree experience for appointment at the Associate University Librarian rank
• Fluency in one or more European languages
• Sound knowledge of the academic research process.
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, students, and colleagues
• Strong outreach and assessment commitment
• Teaching experience
• Flexible and forward-thinking approach to challenges and opportunities in a complex, rapidly changing academic environment.
• Knowledge of current trends in academic and scholarly resource management
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, administrators and the general public

Preferred:
• Advanced degree in the humanities
• Fluency in French
• Expertise with scholarly literature of that language and other European languages in general
• Familiarity with the history and culture of France, Spain and Italy
• Experience managing collections in an academic or research library
• Competence with information technologies and demonstrated effectiveness in integrating technology with traditional services and resources
• Library instruction and Reference Desk experience
• Experience with grants and fund raising
• Experience in an academic setting that awards tenure

GEORGE A. SMATHERS LIBRARIES
The libraries of the University of Florida form the largest information resource system in the state of Florida. The UF Libraries consist of seven libraries; six are in the system known as the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida. The libraries hold over 5,800,000 print volumes, 8,100,000 microfilms, 630,000 e-books, 121,016 full-text electronic journals, 889 electronic databases, 1,300,000 documents and 766,000 maps and images. The libraries have built a number of nationally significant research collections, including the Latin American, Judaica, Florida History, Children’s Literature, and Maps and Imagery Collections. HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES LIBRARY (Library West)
The Humanities and Social Sciences Library (Library West) is the largest branch library on the UF campus, with 14 faculty and 16 staff members, seating for 1,600 patrons, and 217 public computers, including iPads and Netbook laptops. Last year, Library West received over 1.2 million visitors. Renovated in 2006, the branch offers 16 group study rooms, 3 media rooms, including video conferencing facilities, faculty and graduate carrels as well as a limited-access floor for graduate students. Two classrooms are available, one with auditorium-style seating and the other with 19 computers for hands-on instruction. Within the branch, there are four functional units: Research Assistance, Instruction and Outreach, Collections, and Circulation; these units are managed by coordinators who oversee the daily functions.
