Announcement:

The University of South Florida Library, Tampa seeks nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Director for Digital Collections. This position will be responsible for the transformational change in digital collections leadership required to move the organization toward national and international prominence, especially, but not limited to, the areas of Florida Studies, Children’s and Young Adult Literature, Science Fiction, and Holocaust & Genocide Studies. The successful candidate will work with colleagues throughout the university to create, preserve, and provide access to digital collections. The Assistant Director for Digital Collections is a non-tenure earning, faculty position that reports to the Director of Special and Digital Collections and supervises a staff of 5.0 permanent FTE plus student assistants/temporary employees as needed.
Responsibilities:
The Librarian will:

  • Lead digital collections operations and set priorities for unit staff
  • Create digital collections projects that enhance academic and digital library services
  • Collaborate with subject and technical specialists within the Library and across the university to create, maintain, and steward digital collections
  • Evaluate and drive new technology for digital collections to result in a positive national and international reputation for the organization
  • Collaborate with others on collections residing in other content management systems (e.g. Scholar Commons, Digital Library of the Caribbean, SobekCM, etc.) Provide vision and implement relevant national standards and best practices for digital collection access and preservation
  • Assess quality, impact, and user satisfaction with the Library’s digital collections
  • Analyze issues that affect integration and interoperability, data migration, and digital preservation Direct effective acquisition, appraisal, and ingest processes for analog and born-digital objects
  • Secure grant funding for digital projects
  • Assume budget oversight and management for digital collections operations
  • Provide curriculum integration support and digital literacy instruction for faculty and students
  • Guide faculty and students in the creation of online exhibitions utilizing the Library’s digital content and products
  • Work with faculty to develop and create signature digital collections
  • Collaborate with teaching faculty and library staff to deliver digital collections services
  • Manage Special & Digital Collections in the Director’s absence

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA/MLS or foreign equivalent
  • No less than three years professional experience working in digital scholarship, production of digital resources and/or digital initiatives
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in project management and process planning and assessment practices for the successful completion of complex projects in a team environment
  • Evidence of participation in professional organizations, engagement in research and publishing as required for promotion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing and/or utilizing open source digital asset management systems
  • Experience with a variety of metadata standards and thesauri
  • Experience with relevant programming and markup strategies and processes
  • Experience with conversion of materials from analog to digital format, born-digital resources, and long-term management and preservation of digital objects
  • Proven record of securing state, federal, and/or private grant funding to support digital collections projects
  • Familiarity with copyright law as it pertains to creating and presenting digital content

Position Information:
Faculty position, non-tenure track. Full-time, twelve-month contract with excellent benefits. Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
