Job Description
Reporting to the Assistant Director of the UCLA Center for Jewish Studies, the Digital Projects Coordinator will oversee the digital research and teaching initiatives of the Center. The Coordinator will work closely with the Center Director to develop and steward a number of digital initiatives, including web-based research projects, publishing platforms, and courses with digital components. In particular, the Coordinator will facilitate the “HyperCities — Mapping Jewish Los Angeles” project and serve as the point-of-contact for the HyperCities project in general. Together with the UCLA Library, “HyperCities ? Mapping Jewish Los Angeles” is a collaborative research and teaching project to create a multimedia archive and digital mapping of the history of Jewish Los Angeles. Knowledge of and experience with web-based technologies and digital tools in spatial analysis, visualization, Geographic Information Systems, and digital archiving are necessary for this position. The Digital Projects Coordinator will work closely with the HyperCities team, the CJS Community Affairs Coordinator, the UCLA Library, and various community and campus entities collaborating on the Jewish Los Angeles project. The Coordinator will also oversee and coordinate student projects on key neighborhoods and cities of historic significance to the Jewish experience. Finally, the Coordinator will serve as liaison to the UCLA Program in Digital Humanities, the UCLA Library, the Autry Museum, Yiddishkayt, and other partners working on related digital initiatives.
Desired Qualifications:
– Ability to coordinate a diverse team of programmers, librarians, student staff, and faculty to ensure the development and success of the Center’s digital initiatives.
– Familiarity with digital tools and technologies in research environments, including GIS (ArcGIS and/or ArcMap), web interfaces, database management, XML, and other mark-up languages.
– Demonstrated proficiency in HTML, CSS, Javascript, and/or other scripting languages to build and maintain websites, and to harness open-source and Web 2.0 tools, content management systems, and other cloud and web technologies for CJS projects.
– Ability to interact with the Jewish community, community partners, and faculty in the greater Los Angeles area.
– Organizational skills in setting priorities and developing a plan of action to attain goals for Center and prioritize complex work load.
– Ability to build relationships with current and potential partners, foundations, and organizations.
– Strong time management skills. Assume responsibility for special projects. Ability to maintain meticulous records and project documentation; proficiency in dealing with details.
– Independent judgment and decision making abilities to resolve long and short term problems.
– Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse project teams. Ability to set realistic goals and achieve results.
– Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to update websites, use social media, write reports, and assist with grant proposals and fundraising materials.
– Knowledge of internet and library resources to do extensive research for the Center.
– Research skills to identify potential donors, foundations and federal agencies.
– Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with faculty, staff, distinguished scholars, donors, community leaders, administrators, and students.
– Ability to listen effectively and to communicate information.
– Skill in interacting with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
– Ability to exercise tact and discretion with confidential matters and sensitive information.
