DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Associate Dean for Collections and Technical Services, the Director of Digital Scholarship leads an energetic and collaborative program that engages faculty, staff, and students in initiatives to maximize the dissemination, preservation and impact of the university’s scholarship and research. This individual will oversee UK Libraries’ new institutional repository, UKnowledge (http://uknowledge.uky.edu), a Digital Commons based initiative. The Director will continue the development of repository policies, procedures and services. The Director will engage with faculty and students to secure content and develop partnerships. The Director will create promotional materials, actively advertise UKnowledge to the university community, and develop the UK Libraries’ scholarly communications website. The Director will collaborate with UK Information Technology on the development of an enterprise repository for campus.
The Director serves as a resource on local and national policy to help the university community stay informed and involved with the changing landscape for scholarly communication. The Director collaborates with the Head of Collection Management and with colleagues throughout UK Libraries and the campus, providing leadership for digital scholarship, guidance on fair use and other copyright issues related to author rights and publishing. The Director will actively monitor national trends, standards, and policies in scholarly communication and represents the Libraries in local, regional, and national forums/organizations relating to digital scholarship as appropriate.
Required qualifications:
ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science
Professional library experience working directly with faculty
Awareness of current issues in scholarly communication (i.e. open access, author rights, copyright, fair use, deposit mandates)
Understanding of repository architecture and data curation issues
Knowledge of digital preservation standards
Knowledge and understanding of research dissemination
Ability to function independently, be creative, manage multiple projects and set goals and priorities in a dynamic environment
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Ability to interact positively and productively in a collegial academic environment with library colleagues and researchers.
Commitment to ongoing professional development and evidence of the ability to meet
University of Kentucky requirements for Promotion and Tenure.
Preference will be given to candidates with:
A minimum of 3 years of related experience
Experience working with Digital Commons
Supervisory experience
Knowledge of current metadata schemas and standards.
SALARY and BENEFITS: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Tenure track, 12-
month appointment, 22 days annual leave, TIAA/CREF and Fidelity retirement plans.

LIBRARY: Located in the beautiful bluegrass region of central Kentucky, the University of Kentucky Libraries system includes the main William T. Young Library, Medical Center Library, Special Collections, Agricultural Information Center, Little Fine Arts Library, Design Library, Education Library, Engineering Library, and Science Library. Combined holdings total more than 3.5 million volumes. The system has a faculty of 59 and a support and professional staff of 77 and serves a student body of 28,000. The UK Libraries use the Voyager integrated library system. Library membership includes ARL, Lyrasis, ASERL, and the Center for Research Libraries, and is a regional depository for U.S. government publications.
